Peeling Back the Layers – A Business Update
Peeling Back the Layers – A Business Update
This week I thought I would switch things up a little and share more about the product-based business that I’ve been building!
For context, and for those of you that haven’t read my ‘About Me’ page yet, I relocated to Columbus, Ohio in November 2022 for a fresh start… unfortunately, I didn’t realize that would also include losing my corporate job shortly after. To be fair, I had been warned that a new work-from-home policy may be put in place that would restrict employees from continuing to work remotely but no one thought it would be put in place as quickly as it was! Since there were no local offices in Columbus… I was SOL.
I decided to take a couple months off to focus on my mental health, while also giving myself time and space to be intentional about my next steps. For anyone that knows me, I’m usually someone with a detailed plan and at least three backup plans — I am a chronic overthinker and usually take time to consider all of my options before making any big decisions.
To say I was completely out of my comfort zone when I lost my job so quickly without a backup plan is an understatement!
As I was considering my options, I realized that this would probably be my only opportunity to pursue a dream of mine that I’ve had for years — building my own business.
I was out of excuses! I could no longer fall back on “I can always do it later,” or my personal favorite “I don’t have enough time.”
With my mind made up — but no concreate plan — I began building My At Home Adventures™.
Lets back up; I had the idea to create My At Home Adventures™ when my daughter was in virtual kindergarten during the pandemic. I noticed she was having trouble paying attention during her daily Zoom classes because the curriculum was so dry! After further research, I learned that most public schools in the US don’t introduce science, social studies or history until 4th or 5th grade — all subjects that my daughter absolutely loved and was interested in reading more about!
I started creating our own “learning boxes,” full of resources — magazines, workbooks, coloring pages, crafts etc — on her favorite subject, Ancient Egypt. We had a blast learning about Egypt while also sneakily working on learning how to read and practicing our writing.
I realized that so many parents and caregivers could benefit from these “learning boxes” — which have since evolved into my signature product, the Adventure Box — because they were geared towards what their children were actually interested in!
Thus, my slogan “curiosity fueled learning” was born.
I started creating digital, mini Adventure Boxes for friends and family and got great feedback, which only fueled my motivation to get this business off the ground!
It’s crazy to think back to 2021 when this was just an idea!
Today I’m a registered LLC, I have an approved Trademark and, most importantly, a Graphic Designer and Illustrator helping me bring this idea to life.
My At Home Adventures™ is scheduled to launch on October 28, 2023 and I’m excited to share more about what I’ve learned on building a product-based business! It’s been a long road and I’ve made many costly mistakes along the way, but it’ll be worth it when my vision becomes a reality!
